And so it was. The inaugural Motoring Festival hosted by the Gilbert’s Motor Museum, Strathalbyn was held on the 27th of November in glorious spring conditions on the magnificent Strathalbyn Oval. I estimate in excess of some 200 cars and motorcycles were on display supporting what organisers say was a great success.
Our own convoy convened here at Adelaide Hills Toyota about 8.30am and raised some extra funds for the museum offering a highly anticipated coffee for a gold coin donation. Some twenty cars belonging to mates covered all aspects of motoring and included an MG TD, Porsche 356 coupe, Camaro RS, VW County Buggy, Karman Ghia, Corvette, Mitsubishi EVO, Kombi’s, Porsche 911’s, 83 Toyota Supra, a DeLorean and a “barn find” XY Falcon GT to name but a few.
Departing at 9.15am we took the long way to Strathalbyn via the Angus River Scenic Drive through Echunga and Macclesfield. Driving an old car through the Adelaide Hills on a fine Sunday morning makes you realise just how lucky you are and as we parked together on the oval there were smiles from ear to ear. The day was a very relaxed affair with fine food and coffee available from the food vendors to accompany the discussion on all things motoring. My sort of day!
To Graham Simpson and his merry hoard of enthusiastic helpers who all volunteered their time, well done. To pull off such a successful event, the first time is a massive credit to you all. I hope and trust this even will go from strength to strength and greatly assist to raise funding going forward allowing the museum to operate well into the future. See you next year!
