There are many joys to be had working in a business where we deal with the public each and every day. Meeting Jeff Sunderland was one such joy. As is often the case with high profile people, they aren’t any different to you and me and in Sundo’s case he definitely didn’t see himself as anything other than your average “Joe”. He was however one of the funniest, thoughtful people I have had the pleasure of knowing. My last conversation with him, only a week or so ago, was a phone call out of the blue to congratulate us on our recent awards. Such was his thoughtful and caring nature. And within the space of three or four minutes he’d give you his humorous and insightful take on the state of the footy, the wider community and some wonderful social commentary on the state of the world. He was a gifted conversationalist, a gentleman and an absolute gem.
So while it is with some sadness that I write this, he’s actually the LAST bloke that would want anyone to feel sad or upset at his passing. So instead, while I will miss him, I’ll be grateful for having met him and the positive influence he has had on my life. And I will ask myself, as we all should: am I a positive influence upon those I come into contact with, as Sundo was? Because that is what Sundo would want. Vale Jeff Sunderland
